April 1, 2015:
Me to my oldest son: “Son, you’d have to get up *pretty* early in the morning to pull an April Fool’s joke on your mama.”
[15 seconds pass]
My 8 year old son: “Mama, come quick!! There’s a scorpion in the pantry!!!”
Me: “GASP!!!!!! WHERE????!!!”
Son, beaming: “April Fool’s!!”
Grrr. 😉
There you have it. The best way I can figure my son will get me on April Fool’s Day. I don’t like scorpions.
Is it just me?
The thing is, as much as I love living in the amazing Arizona desert, scorpions will never ever EVER be a part of that love. However, I found a way to give myself a little peace of mind while we live our lives out here in the area of scorpion control: I made a homemade scorpion repellant using essential oils, that has worked very well for us so far.
It’s super easy to make, simply adding high quality essential oils to water and a spray bottle.
Homemade Scorpion Repellant
In a spray bottle, combine:
- 2 cups water
- 20 drops cedarwood essential oil
- 20 drops lavender essential oil
- 10 drops lemon essential oil
- 10 drops wild orange essential oil
- 5 drops cinnamon essential oil
Shake to distribute before using.
Spray around door and window frames. Spray along edges of floors. Do this every couple of weeks.
The cedarwood oil is essential, no pun intended. Scorpions hate cedarwood oil! In fact, it will almost kill them on the spot. Make sure you’re using potent essential oils. Please don’t waste your time and money by using the ones off of Amazon. I’ve tried them, and they are just not worth it!
Here’s the recipe in printable card form in case you need to print it out:

I recently received an email from someone who has tried this recipe and he graciously gave me permission to publish his email:
Shalom,
I live in Israel in the desert. we have have a hot summer and many scorpions have made their way into the house. I searched for a way to repel them and came across your blog. I ordered the oils from a reliable source here in Israel. I sprayed all around the house, inside and out where scorpions could enter. Also from the inside where they could also enter. I went away for a few days and when I came back in one of the bathrooms was a dead scorpion on the floor. later I found another one.
I do not like killing living creatures and I thought that the spray would just repel them.
Hopefully they went higher…..Thank you for the blog and this is a testimony that it works.
Love and Light,
Shmuel
Thank you for your testimony, Shmuel! 🙂
Although I named this post “homemade scorpion repellant,” I must reiterate that cedarwood oil is lethal to scorpions and this is more than just a repellant, it will also kill scorpions.
Homemade Scorpion Repellant Using Diatomaceous Earth
Another option is food grade diatomaceous earth, one of my favorite products for health and home. According to diatomaceousearth.com,
When the scorpion comes into contact with the DE, the powder will attach to the exoskeleton of the scorpion and begin to dehydrate. Continued use of DE will also protect your home from future scorpion infestations.

Best of luck ridding your home of those critters!
So where did you purchase your esstional oils from?
Hi Lana, I purchase my oils from doTerra, I’ve had the best experience with that brand. If you’d like to look around their selection, you can find it here.
DoTerra is just to expensive for me. Is there another less expensive option, for scorpion recipe?
What do you consider ‘good oils’. Amazon has NOW and Doterra.
There are some good oils out there; unfortunately, few can be found on Amazon. I love doterra; they’ve given me the best results. But ordering doterra off Amazon isn’t worth your while; in order to make money selling off Amazon, the caps have to be opened and the oils have to be diluted. 🙁 It’s better to order through the company’s website. If you’d like, you can order through my link, or you can find a local doterra rep. <3
Going to try this recipe! Just wondering if the oils will damage the surfaces I apply the spray to. Renting a home and don’t want to leave marks or damage to the outside foundation or inside (walls, door framing etc). Thanks!
I was impressed by the post, but the credibility gone once you poopooed the essential oils for sale anywhere but through your link. Too bad, you almost had me.

That’s funny! I don’t sell essential oils anymore & I’m fairly certain there’s no link in the post to my essential oil brand. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with saying it and I’ll say it again: Purchase high-quality products for best results.
I know this is an old post, but does it matter which kind of cedar oil you use? I don’t know whether I should buy the cedarwood atlas, or the cedarwood Virginia? Which did you use?
Hi Cynthia, the one I used was Juniperus Virginiana, but I’m not certain if it matters. <3
Hi there. The only thing I’m missing is the cinnamon essential oil. I purchase my oils from Sprouts. I need to make this spray ASAP and wondering if not having cinnamon oil will kill its potency. Thanks
Hi Lara. I’m not sure; you would just need to try and see. <3
