Whether you are a devoted shampoo user, or go the “no-poo” route, I’ve learned that dry shampoo is something you absolutely need to have in your beauty stash. For a while I never knew what in the world dry shampoo was – that name didn’t even make sense to me. I did finally learn what it was, but then I made a mistake – I went out and bought a commercial dry shampoo from Target. Boo! I should have done more research. It is completely simple to make your own at home using one of these dry shampoo recipes for much less, and it’s way better for you too! Learn how.

What is Dry Shampoo?
Dry shampoo is a dry powder that you add to oily areas of your hair and scalp. Usually, around the hairline and down the part are the most popular application areas, but you can apply it anywhere you want. The dry powder absorbs the oils (sebum) on your scalp and hair. You then brush out the powder, leaving your hair soft and clean(er). The powder leaves some of its residue behind, which for me adds volume. Nice!!
Since there is some powder left behind, it’s usually best to match the dry shampoo somewhat to your hair color, but as you’ll see I sometimes use plain ol’ arrowroot starch all by itself.

So in this amusing (okay, possibly creepy looking) photo is me and my oily hair, right after applying some arrowroot. This is before brushing, and I took a pic because the powder made me look like I had gray hair and it amused me. Kind of a cool look. It amused me so much I forgot to take a pic of the finished result. Oops.
Don’t be like me.
Anyway, I must tell you – using dry shampoo counts as washing your hair. (You know, the shampoo part of dry shampoo.) This is especially important to no-pooers who are trying to stretch their washes farther apart. So, use it minimally, here and there. But definitely have it in your stash, because it certainly comes in handy.
Why Use Dry Shampoo?
Use dry shampoo recipes like the ones I share with you later for these reasons:
- when you don’t have time to wash your hair and have to be in public without looking like a ’50s greaser.
- to stretch the number of days between wet hair washes – remember, this technically removes sebum and counts as a no-poo wash.
- to add a little volume during transition period
- you can easily make this at home for pennies
- it’s better for your hair and scalp than commercial dry shampoo products
- it’s easier to wash out than commercial dry shampoos
